"The Communication Spectrum"

National Deaf Awareness Week will be September 17 - 24, 2011. A consortium of Tulsa area deafness-related organizations is putting together a fun variety of events you won’t want to miss.

 

Enter the 2011 Deaf Awareness Week Poster Contest! Deadline for Entries is Thursday, September 15th. Please bring to TSHA office on or before Thursday. Judging/Voting will take place during Deaf Awareness Week. Voting will take place September 19th – 22nd. Download a copy of the Poster Contest rules and an entry form.

Friday, September 16
  • TSHA's HUGE annual Rummage Sale!
    A pre-DAW event
    TSHA
    (11th Street between Mingo and Memorial)
    8:30 AM - 3:00 PM
    Come early for the best selection, and come back again late for the bargains. Proceeds benefit the Tulsa Area United Way.

Saturday, September 17
  • Deaf Crazy Olympics
    9 AM to 4 PM
    $5.00 (includes a Subway sandwich, chips and one drink)
    at Whiteside Park
    4009 S. Pittsburg Ave. Tulsa

Monday, September 19th
  • Silent Dinner at Incredible Pizza.  4:30 – 7:30 p.m. Food, friends, fun – what more could you ask for?!! The cost will be $5 for our all-you-can-eat-and-drink group. Tuesday, September 20
  • Deaf Deaf World experiential workshops! Offered to the public for the first time in two years. At TSHA, either 3:00 or 4:00 (if enough people NEED a 5:00, we’ll try to provide that too). RSVP to Diana Higgins or to Lynn Null to be included. This is a great chance to educate your friends, employers, HR personnel, church staff, doctor’s office/hospital workers, etc. Tell them to sign up now. FREE!

  • Poster and Essay Contest What does “The Communication Spectrum” mean to you? Anyone who has a hearing loss can enter the poster, the essay, or both contests. There will be four categories: elementary, middle school, high school, and adult. Submission has to be made by 5:00 pm on September 15th to Lynn Null. Posters and essays will be voted on during TSHA’s Open House. For more information contact Lynn at lnull@tsha.cc. Download a copy of the Poster Contest rules and an entry form.

  • TSHA Open House TSHA will have an open house from 4:00– 6:30 pm. Come join us for refreshments, voting on the poster and essay contest, AND... we will be having a video time when you can come and tell a story or whatever you want for 5 minutes! Wednesday, September 21
  • Celebration Service hosted by Praise Assembly Deaf Church at
    2930 S. Garnett in Tulsa. All denominations invited for this gathering. 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. Refreshments included.

Thursday, September 22
  • The CI Support Group will be meeting at 6:45 pm at the Mary K. Chapman Center for Communicative Disorders at TU (2820 E. 5th St.). The guest speaker will be Dr. Wayne Berryhill, a cochlear implant surgeon from the Norman and Oklahoma City area. Refreshments will be provided starting at 6:30 pm. Everyone is welcome, including individuals with CIs and anyone considering a CI. Parents, spouses, families and all interested people are invited.

  • ASL Film “Black Sand” Watch the ASL movie in Bartlesville at the
    Eastland 4 Theater (530 SE Washington Blvd). Show time is at
    7:00 pm and the cost is $10. Movie is in ASL and also is closed
    captioned. You can purchase tickets at TSHA.

  • Students Day: This year Oklahoma deaf and hard of hearing students are meeting at the Tulsa Zoo. This is a rare opportunity for kids to meet others with hearing loss outside their classroom, while they
    learn more about animals too! Adult and parent volunteers are welcomed. Find school rates at www.tulsazoo.org.

  • A presentation called Safety in Any Language: Disaster Preparedness in our Communities will be hosted by the Tulsa Police Department, and Tulsa Language & Culture Bank. Download a presentation flyer.

    1:00 to 4:00 PM at the Police Headquarters, CompStat Room, 600 Civic Center in Tulsa.

  • ASL Film “Black Sand”, 7:00 PM - $10.00 PM. The film will be showing at the Eastland 4 Theater 530 SE Washington Blvd in Bartlesville.
