Independent Living Program
The Independent Living (IL)
Program, in cooperation with peer counselors from the community who are Deaf
or hard-of-hearing, provides skills training in a wide variety of areas.
- Independent living skills are taught in a state-of-the-art model apartment/computer lab and in the community. Training is tailored to fit the individual needs and interests of each participant. Typical topics include: housekeeping, money management, legal concerns, transportation, personal hygiene, consumer information, communication and community services. Adults and students, age 14 and over, can also attend a week-long "Summer Day Camp" which provides intensive skills training and information in a group setting.
- Pre-occupational skills training and support are provided, including encouragement for individuals to become involved as volunteers in the community.
- Workshops are sponsored several times a year focusing on advocacy training and other topics of community interest.
- IL also networks with other community programs and facilities to provide contact for appropriate emergency assistance, licensed counseling services, mental health programs and drug and alcohol treatment.
